"Pain free permanent hair removal" is a nonsensical phrase to anyone who's ever tried to accomplish it. But the physical, temporary pain of hair removal is an attempt to relieve the even more emotionally painful experience of having unwanted hair. We think it's worth it. Every hair free day is worth it!

And let's face it, Electrolysis is Expert Mode hair removal, so you've probably already tried everything else and are familiar with how you react to each temporary removal method. Pain is subjective, but we place Electrolysis at a similar pain level to getting a tattoo, with similar areas being more sensitive to pain. In general, areas close to bone (face, shins, tops of feet) and more delicate skin (upper lip, bikini area) will be most sensitive.
Here are some tips to make your Electrolysis session less intense physically and mentally:
The Basics:
Drink water ahead of time, eat something, and bring your water bottle with you - First line of defense is being hydrated and fed. A cool sip of water can soothe your nerves and give you a break from the sensation. Pro-Tip: avoid caffeine before your session.
Numbing cream - You're tough, obviously, but you don't need to be a hero! Numbing cream exists and is an excellent tool. Depending on the area and length of the session, numbing cream may be applied at home before arriving, or can be applied at the studio prior to treatment.
OTC Pain medication - take as directed on the package in advance of your session to lessen your pain response.
Deep breathing and pacing - In through your nose, out through your mouth. Slow, steady breathing is our best built-in pain management tool. Meditation and mindfullness practices
Distraction - fidget toys, headphones, chewing gum, coversation, (again, depending on the area) can all help give your mind and body something else to focus on.
Normalize - release any sense of shame you may hold about your unwanted body hair. Everyone has a relationship with their own body, and this is a way that you care for yourself, not punish yourself.
Laughter and After Care - Celebrate yourself! Maybe spend a few minutes watching something silly, or get yourself that sweet latte you had skipped before.
Give yourself time to heal - Keep the area clean and dry; avoid excessive sun, sweat, and harsh products, especially for the first 24 hours after treatment. It's very common and non-damaging for small whiteheads to occur, leave them be and they will heal without leaving any hyperpigmentation or pitting! We like to keep it simple with an antibiotic ointment or witch hazel .
Experiment with any of these tips before your next Electrolysis hair removal session and observe if you feel a difference!
